How to set up medicine reminders for elderly parents
Keeping track of a parent's medicines gets harder as the list grows. These are organising tips — they don't replace your parent's doctor, who decides what to take and how much.
1. Make one up-to-date medicine list
Gather every current prescription and every medicine at home. Write one list: the medicine's name, what the prescription says about timing, and how long it is for. Take the list to the next visit and ask the doctor or pharmacist to confirm it. If the short forms are confusing, see common prescription short forms.
2. Tie each time to a daily routine
"After breakfast" or "at bedtime" is easier to remember than a clock time. Match each reminder to something your parent already does every day, exactly as the prescription says.
3. Use a weekly pill organiser
A box with morning, afternoon and night compartments for each day makes it easy to see whether a dose was taken. Fill it once a week from the confirmed list, ideally with a second family member checking.
4. Set reminders that are hard to miss
- Label each phone alarm with the medicine's name, not just "medicine".
- Decide who gets the reminder — your parent, you, or both.
- Use a loud tone and large text if eyesight or hearing is a concern.
5. Keep a simple record
Note each dose as taken or skipped. It helps you spot a pattern and gives the doctor an honest picture at the next visit.
6. Plan refills before they run out
Write down when each medicine will run out and reorder a few days early, especially for medicines taken every day.
7. Keep the important things in one place
Keep the latest prescription, the medicine list and emergency numbers together. In an emergency in India, call 112, or 108 for an ambulance.
8. Involve your parent
Talk through the plan together. People stick to routines they helped design, and it respects their independence.
